Odin enters a giant’s hall under another name; a questioning contest moves from world origins to a secret only he can ask.

    Frigg’s Warning

    Odin wants to test wisdom with Vafthruthnir; Frigg says no giant matches him, yet wishes Odin a safe return.

  2. 02

    Gagnrath Enters the Hall

    Odin arrives as Gagnrath. Vafthruthnir gives him a seat and sets a wager in which wisdom decides who may leave.

  3. 03

    Four Questions at the Doorway

    The giant first asks about the horses of day and night, the river between two peoples, and a future battlefield. Odin names Ifing, and the questioning changes hands.

  4. 04

    The World in an Answer

    Odin asks whence earth and sky came; Vafthruthnir answers that they came from Ymir’s flesh, bones, skull, and blood.

  5. 05

    What the Giant Remembers

    The questions turn to the giants’ deep past. Vafthruthnir says his earliest memory is Bergelmir borne in a boat.

  6. 06

    Wind from an Eagle’s Wings

    Odin asks where unseen wind comes from. Vafthruthnir answers with Hraesvelg’s eagle shape and wings, then continues to claim travel through nine worlds.

  7. 07

    The Claim of Nine Worlds

    Before the secret question, Odin asks whether the giant truly knows the runes of gods and giants. Vafthruthnir says he has travelled through nine worlds and down to Niflhel.

  8. 08

    The Question No Guest Could Ask

    Odin asks what he whispered to his son before the pyre. Vafthruthnir does not expose the secret, but recognizes Odin and concedes his greater wisdom.
