Ragnarok

From Fimbulwinter, swallowed lights, broken fetters and hostile hosts to the staged last combats of Odin, Thor, Freyr, Tyr and Heimdall, Surtr's fire, the rising earth and survivors, this story gathers earlier Norse pressures into destruction and renewal.

    Fimbulwinter

    Long winter and human violence open the doom sequence.

  2. 02

    Sun and Moon Swallowed

    Skoll swallows Sol, Hati seizes Mani, and the stars vanish.

  3. 03

    Fetters and Sea Break

    Fenrir gets free, Jormungandr drives the sea over land, and Naglfar is loosed.

  4. 04

    Muspell to Vigrid

    Surtr, Muspell's sons, Loki and other hosts move to Vigrid, and Bifrost breaks.

  5. 05

    Gjallarhorn and Counsel

    Heimdall blows Gjallarhorn, the gods assemble, Odin rides to Mimir's Well, and Yggdrasil trembles.

  6. 06

    Odin, Fenrir and Vidar

    Odin fights Fenrir and is swallowed; Vidar then avenges his father.

  7. 07

    Thor and Jormungandr

    Thor kills Jormungandr but is driven to death by the serpent’s venom.

  8. 08

    Freyr, Tyr and Heimdall in the Last Battle

    Freyr falls to Surtr, Tyr and Garm kill each other, and Loki and Heimdall die together.

    Surtr's Fire

    After the final combats, Surtr casts fire over the earth and the world burns.

  10. 10

    Gods on the Renewed Earth

    The earth rises again; Vidar and Vali remain, Baldr and Hodr return from Hel, and Thor’s sons receive Mjolnir.

  11. 11

    Lif and Lifthrasir People the World Again

    Lif and Lifthrasir hide in Hoddmimir’s Wood, live on morning dew, and people the world again after the fire.
