Overview
Mnemosyne is the personification of Memory and a member of the earlier Titan generation. After Zeus gains rule, Hesiod says she bears the nine Muses, daughters of one mind whose concern is song and whose art offers release from care. Their genealogy also returns the reader to the Theogony's opening, where the Muses commission the poet to sing divine births and honours. Memory therefore becomes the condition through which the new order can be sung, preserved and transmitted.
