A blessed far region in the Odyssey, set apart from ordinary mortal fate and linked with Rhadamanthus.
Overview
Elysium appears in Odyssey Book 4 as a blessed far region promised to Menelaus, not as the ordinary destination of all the dead. Proteus says Menelaus will not die as other mortals do but will be sent to the Elysian plain, where life is easy and Rhadamanthus is associated with the place. The passage makes Elysium an exceptional destiny shaped by divine kinship and favour. That early Homeric specificity should be preserved rather than treating Elysium as a generic blessed afterlife for every good soul.
