Nessus
A centaur whose dying deception of Deianira drives the late Heracles story toward its fatal end.
Overview
Nessus is the centaur in Heracles’ later story, but his role is larger than that of an opponent defeated in a fight. Pseudo-Apollodorus narrates that Heracles shoots him, yet before dying he deceives Deianira by presenting his blood as a means of preserving love. His death therefore becomes a delayed plot: the hero wins the immediate encounter but cannot erase the consequence set in motion by the victim’s words. Nessus links violent assault, deceit and the suffering that later brings Heracles to the edge of death.
