Helle
Daughter of Nephele who falls into the sea while fleeing with Phrixus on the golden ram, giving the strait its name.

Overview
Helle is the sister of Phrixus and belongs to the prehistory of the Golden Fleece. Pseudo-Apollodorus says the children flee a crisis on the golden ram, but Helle falls into the sea on the way, and the strait’s name is connected with her. Her brief role changes the Fleece from a sudden prize in Jason’s quest into the trace of an earlier escape, loss at sea and reception in Colchis. Helle marks the first cost and place-name memory behind the later adventure.
