Chiron
Wise centaur and tutor of heroes; Pindar links Jason’s upbringing to his instruction.

Overview
Chiron is the wise centaur tutor, sharply different from the more violent centaur type. Pindar’s Pythian 4 connects Jason’s upbringing with Chiron, giving the Argonaut story a phase of education, protection and royal preparation before the voyage begins. Apollonius also lets Chiron touch the world around Jason at the expedition’s opening. Chiron can connect to many heroic traditions, but in Jason’s context his importance is specific: the hero’s departure becomes the result of long formation, not only a sudden act of courage.
